Spain’s top-flight action resumes following a two-week international break, with Antonio Mohamed’s struggling Celta Vigo kicking things off at the BalaÃdos against an Alavés side that have certainly proved to be one of the early-season surprise packages.
Celta, who currently sit tenth (10 pts, W2, D4, L2) in the La Liga (LL) table, fell to a 2-1 defeat at Sevilla in their last outing after being reduced to ten men early in the second-half, stretching their winless run to five league games (D3, L2).
The Galician side will be looking to bounce back to their best and extend a 15-match unbeaten run at home in LL, winning six and drawing nine since a 1-0 defeat by Villarreal in December last year.
Abelardo Fernández’s Alavés travel to Vigo in high spirits having seen off Real Madrid 1-0 at the Mendizorrotza, courtesy of a last-gasp header by captain Manu GarcÃa. They now find themselves in sixth place level on 14 points (W4, D2, L2) with Espanyol, a remarkable 11 more than they had after eight games last season – they were second from bottom back then. What a difference a year makes.
Alavés have never beaten Celta away in the top flight (D3, L7) and they have won just four of their previous 27 visits to the BalaÃdos in all competitions (D6, L17).
